Manchester by the Sea is a 2016 American drama film written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan and starring Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler, Gretchen Mol, and Lucas Hedges. The plot follows an uncle who looks after his teenage nephew after the boy’s father dies.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 23, 2016. It began a limited release on November 18, 2016, before going wide on December 16, 2016. The film received widespread acclaim from critics and has grossed $40 million worldwide on a $8.5 million budget.

The film was chosen by American Film Institute and National Board of Review as one of the top ten films of 2016.Casey Affleck won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama. The film is also nominated for numerous awards, including Golden Globe nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress for Williams and Best Screenplay.

Lee Chandler is a brooding, irritable loner who works as a handyman for a Boston apartment block. One damp winter day he gets a call summoning him to his hometown, north of the city. His brother’s heart has given out suddenly, and he’s been named guardian to his 16-year-old nephew. As if losing his only sibling and doubts about raising a teenager weren’t enough, his return to the past re-opens an unspeakable tragedy.
