The 2023\u00a0Royal Rumble<\/b>\u00a0was the 36th annual\u00a0Royal Rumble<\/a>\u00a0professional wrestling<\/a>\u00a0pay-per-view<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0livestreaming<\/a>\u00a0event<\/a>\u00a0produced by\u00a0WWE<\/a>. It was held for wrestlers from the promotion’s\u00a0Raw<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0SmackDown<\/a>\u00a0brand divisions<\/a>. The event took place on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at the\u00a0Alamodome<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0San Antonio<\/a>,\u00a0Texas<\/a>\u00a0as part of the Alamodome’s 30th-anniversary celebration. It was the fourth Royal Rumble event to be held in San Antonio after the\u00a01997<\/a>,\u00a02007<\/a>, and\u00a02017<\/a>\u00a0events and the third to take place at the Alamodome, following 1997 and 2017. It was also WWE’s first event to be livestreamed on\u00a0Binge<\/a>\u00a0in Australia as the\u00a0WWE Network<\/a>\u00a0service in Australia merged with Binge, a streaming service owned by WWE’s Australian rightsholder\u00a0Foxtel<\/a>. This was also the first Royal Rumble to be on the air past midnight\u00a0Eastern time<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Traditionally, the\u00a0Royal Rumble match<\/a>\u00a0winner receives a world championship match at that year’s\u00a0WrestleMania<\/a>. For the 2023 event, the winners of both the men’s and women’s matches received a choice of which world championship to challenge for at\u00a0WrestleMania 39<\/a>. The men could choose to challenge for either Raw’s\u00a0WWE Championship<\/a>\u00a0or SmackDown’s\u00a0Universal Championship<\/a>\u2014currently held and defended together as the\u00a0Undisputed WWE Universal Championship<\/a>\u2014while the women had their choice between the\u00a0Raw<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0SmackDown Women’s Championship<\/a>. While the Royal Rumble match is typically the main event of the card, this was the seventh Royal Rumble in which the match was not the main event, after\u00a01988<\/a>,\u00a01996<\/a>, 1997,\u00a01998<\/a>,\u00a02006<\/a>, and\u00a02013<\/a>.
