The film was directed by\u00a0Guy Ritchie<\/a>\u00a0and produced by\u00a0Joel Silver<\/a>,\u00a0Lionel Wigram<\/a>,\u00a0Susan Downey<\/a>, and\u00a0Dan Lin<\/a>. The screenplay, by Michael Robert Johnson,\u00a0Anthony Peckham<\/a>, and\u00a0Simon Kinberg<\/a>, was developed from a story by Wigram and Johnson.\u00a0Robert Downey Jr.<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Jude Law<\/a>\u00a0portray Sherlock Holmes and\u00a0Dr. John Watson<\/a>, respectively. In 1890, eccentric detective Holmes and his companion Watson are hired by a secret society to foil a mysticist’s plot to gain control of\u00a0Britain<\/a>\u00a0by seemingly supernatural means.\u00a0Rachel McAdams<\/a>\u00a0stars as their former adversary\u00a0Irene Adler<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Mark Strong<\/a>\u00a0portrays villain Lord Henry Blackwood.<\/p>\n

The film was widely released in North America on 25 December 2009, and on 26 December 2009 in the UK, Ireland, the Pacific and the Atlantic.\u00a0Sherlock Holmes<\/i>\u00a0received mostly positive critical reaction. Downey won the\u00a0Golden Globe Award<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy<\/a>. The film was also nominated for two\u00a0Academy Awards<\/a>,\u00a0Best Original Score<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Best Art Direction<\/a>.
