Although the story is set in Nagasaki, Japan<\/a>, the film was shot entirely on location in Taiwan<\/a> in and around Taipei<\/a>. The film stars Andrew Garfield<\/a>, Adam Driver<\/a>, Liam Neeson<\/a>, Tadanobu Asano<\/a> and Ciar\u00e1n Hinds<\/a>. The plot follows two 17th-century Jesuit<\/a> priests who travel from Portugal to Japan to locate their missing mentor and spread Catholicism<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A long-time passion project for Scorsese, which he developed for over 25 years, the film premiered in Rome on November 29, 2016,\u00a0and was released in the United States on December 23, 2016. The American Film Institute<\/a> selected it as one of its ten Movies of the Year.\u00a0The National Board of Review<\/a> chose it as one of the year’s top ten studio films.<\/p>\n
