The Hobbit<\/b><\/i>\u00a0is a\u00a0film series<\/a>\u00a0consisting of three\u00a0high fantasy<\/a>\u00a0adventure films<\/a>\u00a0directed by\u00a0Peter Jackson<\/a>. The three films are\u00a0The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(2012),\u00a0The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(2013), and\u00a0The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(2014).[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0They are based on the 1937 novel\u00a0The Hobbit<\/a><\/i>\u00a0by\u00a0J. R. R. Tolkien<\/a>, with large portions of the trilogy inspired by the appendices to\u00a0The Return of the King<\/a><\/i>, which expand on the story told in\u00a0The Hobbit<\/i>, as well as new material and characters written especially for the films. Together they act as a\u00a0prequel<\/a>\u00a0to Jackson’s\u00a0The Lord of the Rings<\/i>\u00a0film trilogy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/span>The first film in the trilogy premiered at the\u00a0Embassy Theatre<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Wellington<\/a>,\u00a0New Zealand<\/a>\u00a0on 28 November 2012. One hundred thousand people lined the red carpet on\u00a0Courtenay Place<\/a>, and the entire event was broadcast live on television in New Zealand and\u00a0streamed over the Internet<\/a>. The second film of the series premiered at the\u00a0Dolby Theatre<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Los Angeles<\/a>,\u00a0California<\/a>\u00a0on 2 December 2013. The final film premiered at the\u00a0Odeon Leicester Square<\/a>\u00a0in London on 1 December 2014.[5] <\/a><\/sup>Despite critics considering the series inferior to its predecessor\u00a0The Lord of the Rings<\/i>, it was successful financially;\u00a0The Hobbit<\/i>\u00a0trilogy is\u00a0one of the highest-grossing film series<\/a>\u00a0of all time.
