The\u00a0Before<\/b><\/i>\u00a0trilogy<\/b>\u00a0consists of three films directed by\u00a0Richard Linklater<\/a>, and starring\u00a0Ethan Hawke<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Julie Delpy<\/a>\u00a0as lovers Jesse and C\u00e9line at three different parts of their lives. The trilogy consists of the films\u00a0Before Sunrise<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(1995),\u00a0Before Sunset<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(2004) and\u00a0Before Midnight<\/a><\/i>\u00a0(2013). Filmed and set at nine-year intervals, each film takes place over the course of a few hours. A short sequence in the animated anthology film\u00a0Waking Life<\/a><\/i>\u00a0also features the characters.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Before Sunrise<\/i>\u00a0was inspired by a woman whom writer\/director\u00a0Richard Linklater<\/a>\u00a0met in a toy shop in\u00a0Philadelphia<\/a>\u00a0in 1989.[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0They walked around the city together, conversing deep into the night. Originally in the screenplay, who the two people were and the city they spend time in was vague. Linklater realized that because the film is so much a dialogue between a man and a woman, it was important to have a strong woman co-writer. He chose\u00a0Kim Krizan<\/a>, who had small roles in his two previous films\u00a0Slacker<\/a><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0Dazed and Confused<\/a><\/i>.[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0According to Linklater, he “loved the way her mind worked \u2013 a constant stream of confident and intelligent ideas”.[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
