Snowden<\/b><\/i> is a 2016 biographical<\/a> political thriller<\/a> film directed by Oliver Stone<\/a> and written by Stone and Kieran Fitzgerald, based on the books The Snowden Files<\/a><\/i>by Luke Harding<\/a> and Time of the Octopus<\/i> by Anatoly Kucherena<\/a>. The cast includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt<\/a> as the titular character Edward Snowden<\/a> with Shailene Woodley<\/a>, Melissa Leo<\/a>, Zachary Quinto<\/a>, Tom Wilkinson<\/a>, Scott Eastwood<\/a>, Logan Marshall-Green<\/a>, Timothy Olyphant<\/a>, Ben Schnetzer<\/a>, LaKeith Lee Stanfield<\/a>, Rhys Ifans<\/a> and Nicolas Cage<\/a> also starring. Filming began on February 16, 2015 in Munich<\/a>, Germany<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Snowden<\/i> screened at Comic-Con<\/a> on July 21, 2016, before premiering at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival<\/a> on September 9, 2016. The film was theatrically released in the United States on September 16, 2016, by Open Road Films<\/a> and on September 22 in Germany.[3]<\/a><\/sup> It received mixed reviews and has grossed $31 million worldwide.<\/p>\n
