The Flowers of War<\/b><\/i> (simplified Chinese<\/a>: \u91d1\u9675\u5341\u4e09\u9497<\/span>; traditional Chinese<\/a>: \u91d1\u9675\u5341\u4e09\u91f5<\/span>; pinyin<\/a>: J\u012bnl\u00edng Sh\u00eds\u0101n Ch\u0101i<\/span><\/i>) is a 2011 historical drama<\/a> war film<\/a> directed by Zhang Yimou<\/a>, starring Christian Bale<\/a>, Ni Ni<\/a>, Zhang Xinyi<\/a>, Tong Dawei<\/a>, Atsuro Watabe<\/a>, Shigeo Kobayashi<\/a> and Cao Kefan.[4]<\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/a><\/sup>[6]<\/a><\/sup> The film is based on a novella by Geling Yan<\/a>, 13 Flowers of Nanjing<\/i>, inspired by the diary of Minnie Vautrin<\/a>.[7]<\/a><\/sup> The story is set in Nanking<\/a>, China, during the 1937 Nanking Massacre<\/a> in the Second Sino-Japanese War<\/a>. A group of escapees, finding sanctuary in a church compound, try to survive the plight and persecution brought on by the violent invasion of the city.[8]<\/a><\/sup>[9] <\/a><\/sup>It was selected as the Chinese entry for Best Foreign Language Film<\/a> at the 84th Academy Awards<\/a>,[10]<\/a><\/sup>[11]<\/a><\/sup>[12]<\/a><\/sup> but did not make the final shortlist.[13]<\/a><\/sup> It also received a nomination for the 69th Golden Globe Awards<\/a>.[14]<\/a><\/sup> The 6th Asian Film Awards<\/a> presented The Flowers of War<\/i> with several individual nominations, including Best Film.[15]<\/a><\/sup>[16] <\/a><\/sup>The film’s North American distribution rights<\/a> were acquired by Wrekin Hill Entertainment, in association with Row 1 Productions, leading to an Oscar-qualifying limited release in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco in late December 2011, with general release in January 2012.<\/p>\n
