It was revealed in late 2018 that <a title=\"Lily James\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lily_James\">Lily James<\/a>, who played <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Lady Rose MacClare\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lady_Rose_MacClare\">Lady Rose MacClare<\/a> in the TV series,<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Downton_Abbey_(film)#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> and <a title=\"Samantha Bond\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samantha_Bond\">Samantha Bond<\/a>, who played Lady <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Rosamund Painswick\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rosamund_Painswick\">Rosamund Painswick<\/a> in the show, would not be returning. The film is set in 1927, and features a royal visit to Downton Abbey by <a title=\"George V\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_V\">King George V<\/a> and <a title=\"Mary of Teck\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary_of_Teck\">Queen Mary<\/a>.
