Jurassic Park<\/b><\/i> is an American science fiction<\/a> media franchise<\/a> centered on a disastrous attempt to create a theme park<\/a> of cloned<\/a> dinosaurs<\/a>. It began in 1990 when Universal Pictures<\/a> and Amblin Entertainment<\/a> bought the rights to the novel<\/a> by Michael Crichton<\/a> before it was even published.The book was successful, as was Steven Spielberg<\/a>‘s 1993 film adaptation<\/a>. The film received a theatrical 3D re-release in 2013,[1]<\/a><\/sup> and was selected in 2018 for preservation in the United States National Film Registry<\/a> by the Library of Congress<\/a> as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” A sequel novel, The Lost World<\/a><\/i>, was published in 1995, followed by a film adaptation<\/a> in 1997. Subsequent films in the series, including Jurassic Park III<\/a><\/i> (2001), are not based on the novels. Numerous video games<\/a> and comic books<\/a> based on the franchise have been created since the release of the 1993 film, and several water rides<\/a> have been opened at various Universal theme parks<\/a>. As of 2000, the franchise had generated $5\u00a0billion in revenue, making it one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time<\/a>.[2] <\/a><\/sup>The fourth film, Jurassic World<\/a><\/i>, was initially scheduled to be released in 2005, but was delayed numerous times and was ultimately released in June 2015.<\/p>\n

It became the first film to gross over $500 million worldwide in its opening weekend,[3]<\/a><\/sup> and grossed over $1.6 billion through the course of its theatrical run, making it the sixth highest-grossing film of all time<\/a>. It was also the second highest-grossing film of 2015<\/a>. When adjusted for monetary inflation<\/a>, Jurassic World<\/i> is the second highest-grossing film in the franchise after Jurassic Park<\/i>.A fifth film, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom<\/a><\/i>, was released in June 2018. The film grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide, making it the third Jurassic<\/i> film to pass the billion dollar mark. It is the third highest-grossing film of 2018<\/a> and the 13th highest-grossing film of all time<\/a>. A sixth film, tentatively titled Jurassic World 3<\/a><\/i>, is scheduled to be released on June 11, 2021. Lego<\/a> has produced several animated projects<\/a> based on the Jurassic World<\/i> films, including a miniseries scheduled for release in 2019.
