The Bridge on the River Kwai<\/b><\/i> is a 1957 British-American epic<\/a> war film<\/a> directed by David Lean<\/a> and based on the novel Le Pont de la Rivi\u00e8re Kwa\u00ef<\/a><\/i> (1952) by Pierre Boulle<\/a>. The film uses the historical setting of the construction of the Burma Railway<\/a> in 1942\u20131943. The cast included William Holden<\/a>, Jack Hawkins<\/a>, Alec Guinness<\/a>, and Sessue Hayakawa<\/a>. It was initially scripted by screenwriter Carl Foreman<\/a>, who was later replaced by Michael Wilson<\/a>. Both writers had to work in secret, as they were on the Hollywood blacklist<\/a> and had fled to England in order to continue working. As a result, Boulle, who did not speak English, was credited and received the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay<\/a>; many years later, Foreman and Wilson posthumously received the Academy Award.[3] <\/a><\/sup>The film was widely praised, winning seven Academy Awards<\/a> (including Best Picture) at the 30th Academy Awards<\/a>. It used lush colour to bring out the British stiff upper lip<\/a> of the colonel, played by Alec Guinness<\/a> in an Oscar-winning performance.[4]<\/a><\/sup> In 1997, the film was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry<\/a> by the United States Library of Congress<\/a>. It has been included on the American Film Institute<\/a>‘s list of best American films ever made.[5]<\/a><\/sup>[6]<\/a><\/sup> In 1999, the British Film Institute<\/a> voted The Bridge on the River Kwai<\/i> the 11th greatest British film of the 20th Century<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After settling his differences with a Japanese P.O.W. camp commander, a British colonel co-operates to oversee his men’s construction of a railway bridge for their captors, while oblivious to a plan by the Allies to destroy it.<\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
