The Secret in Their Eyes<\/b><\/i> (Spanish<\/a>: El secreto de sus ojos<\/b><\/i>) is a 2009 crime drama<\/a> film directed, co-written, produced and edited by Juan Jos\u00e9 Campanella<\/a>, based on the novel La pregunta de sus ojos<\/i> (The Question in Their Eyes<\/i>) by Eduardo Sacheri<\/a>, who also co-wrote the screenplay. The film is a joint production of Argentine and Spanish companies.[3] <\/a><\/sup>Using a nonlinear narrative<\/a>, the film depicts a judiciary employee<\/a> and his boss, a law clerk<\/a>, in 1974, played by Ricardo Dar\u00edn<\/a> and Soledad Villamil<\/a>, as they investigate a rape and murder case, while also following the characters 25 years later reminiscing over the case and unearthing the buried romance between them.[4] <\/a><\/sup>The film received awards in both Hollywood<\/a> and Spain<\/a>, notably the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film<\/a> at the 82nd Academy Awards<\/a>, making Argentina, with 1985’s The Official Story<\/a><\/i>, the first country in Latin America<\/a> to win it twice.[5]<\/a><\/sup>[6]<\/a><\/sup> Three weeks before, it had received the Spanish equivalent with the Goya Award for Best Spanish Language Foreign Film<\/a>.[7]<\/a><\/sup> At the time of its release, it became the second highest-grossing film in Argentine history, surpassed only by 1975’s Nazareno Cruz and the Wolf<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n

Hoping to put to rest years of unease concerning a past case, retired criminal investigator Benjam\u00edn Esp\u00f3sito (Ricardo Dar\u00edn) begins writing a novel based on the decades-old unsolved mystery of a newlywed’s rape and murder.
