Judgment at Nuremberg<\/b><\/i> is a 1961 American courtroom drama<\/a> film directed by Stanley Kramer<\/a>, written by Abby Mann<\/a> and starring Spencer Tracy<\/a>, Burt Lancaster<\/a>, Richard Widmark<\/a>, Maximilian Schell<\/a>, Werner Klemperer<\/a>, Marlene Dietrich<\/a>, Judy Garland<\/a>, William Shatner<\/a>, and Montgomery Clift<\/a>.[4]<\/a><\/sup> Set in Nuremberg<\/a> in 1948, the film depicts a fictionalized version of the Judges’ Trial<\/a> of 1947, one of the twelve U.S. military tribunals during the Subsequent Nuremberg trials<\/a>. The film centers on a military tribunal<\/a> led by Chief Trial Judge Dan Haywood (Tracy), before which four German judges and prosecutors (as compared to 16 defendants in the actual Judges’ Trial) stand accused of crimes against humanity<\/a> for their involvement in atrocities committed under the Nazi regime. The film deals with non-combatant war crimes against a civilian population, the Holocaust<\/a>, and examines the post-World War II<\/a> geopolitical complexity of the actual Nuremberg Trials<\/a>. An earlier version of the story was broadcast as a television episode of Playhouse 90<\/a><\/i>.[5]<\/a><\/sup> Schell and Klemperer played the same roles in both productions. In 2013, Judgment at Nuremberg<\/i> was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry<\/a> by the Library of Congress<\/a> as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.<\/p>\n

In 1947, four German judges who served on the bench during the Nazi regime face a military tribunal to answer charges of crimes against humanity. Chief Justice Haywood (Spencer Tracy) hears evidence and testimony not only from lead defendant Ernst Janning (Burt Lancaster) and his defense attorney Hans Rolfe (Maximilian Schell), but also from the widow of a Nazi general (Marlene Dietrich), an idealistic U.S. Army captain (William Shatner) and reluctant witness Irene Wallner (Judy Garland).<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
