Mohenjo Daro<\/b><\/i> is an Indian epic<\/a> adventure<\/a>–romance film<\/a> written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker<\/a>, which shall be the world’s first cinematic presentation referencing the ancient Indus Valley civilization<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and its greatest city, the UNESCO World Heritage site<\/a> known today only as Mohenjo-daro<\/a>. The film is produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur<\/a> for UTV Motion Pictures<\/a> and Sunita Gowariker for Ashutosh Gowariker Productions Pvt. Ltd. (AGPPL), and features actors Hrithik Roshan<\/a> and Pooja Hegde<\/a> in the lead roles.<\/p>\n

Set in 2016 BC<\/a> at the height of the Indus Valley civilization<\/a>, the story follows a simple farmer who travels to the great city and falls in love with a high-status woman, then must challenge the city’s elite and fight against overwhelming odds to save their civilization. Writer-director Gowariker took over three years to research and develop a script, working closely with archaeologists whose lifework is documenting the Indus Valley civilization to ensure authenticity behind the presentation of his fictional story. The film was shot in Bhuj<\/a> and Mumbai<\/a> with short schedules in Jabalpur<\/a> and Thane<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The soundtrack album<\/a> and film score<\/a> are composed by A. R. Rahman<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>with song lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar<\/a>. The film is scheduled for a worldwide release<\/a> on 12 August 2016 \u00a0\u2014 which is just before the Independence Day weekend in both India (whose filmmakers created this project) and Pakistan<\/a> (where the ruins of the ancient city itself are located, in the Sindh province<\/a> about 50 miles from their mutual border).<\/p>\n

Even before its theatrical release to the public, Mohenjo Daro<\/i> has been honoured by selection as the Closing Film of the 69th Locarno International Film Festival<\/a> in Switzerland, and will be screened at the Piazza Grande 13 August 2016 immediately before Locarno’s award ceremony<\/p>\n

Set amid the ancient Indus Valley civilization<\/a> circa 2016 B.C.E, an indigo<\/a> farmer from Amri, Sindh<\/a>[22]<\/a><\/sup> named Sarman (Hrithik Roshan<\/a>) travels upriver to the largest city, Mohenjo-daro<\/a>, where during a street mishap he saves the life of a beautiful woman named Chaani (Pooja Hegde<\/a>) who as “The Chosen One” in service to Sindhu Ma, the goddess of the river which is the centre of their culture, is “the symbol of Mother Sindhu’s grace and blessing.” But Sarman soon falls afoul of the politician Maham (Kabir Bedi<\/a>) and his son Moonja (Arunoday Singh<\/a>) who are seizing power and starting to rule Mohenjo Daro as an empire. To win Chaani, Sarman must defeat Maham and rouse the people to save their city.<\/div><\/div>\n
