Star Wars<\/b><\/i> is an American epic<\/a> space-opera<\/a> media franchise<\/a> created by George Lucas<\/a>. The franchise began with the eponymous 1977 film<\/a> and quickly became a worldwide pop-culture<\/a> phenomenon<\/a>.The first film, later subtitled Episode IV \u2013 A New Hope<\/i>, was followed by the sequels Episode V \u2013 The Empire Strikes Back<\/a><\/i> (1980) and Episode VI \u2013 Return of the Jedi<\/a><\/i> (1983), forming what is collectively referred to as the original trilogy<\/a>. A prequel trilogy<\/a> was later released, consisting of Episode I \u2013 The Phantom Menace<\/a><\/i> (1999), Episode II \u2013 Attack of the Clones<\/a><\/i> (2002) and Episode III \u2013 Revenge of the Sith<\/a><\/i> (2005). Finally, a sequel trilogy<\/a> began with Episode VII \u2013 The Force Awakens<\/a><\/i> (2015), continued with Episode VIII \u2013 The Last Jedi<\/a><\/i> (2017), and will conclude with Episode IX \u2013 The Rise of Skywalker<\/a><\/i> (2019).[1]<\/a><\/sup> The first eight films were nominated<\/a> for Academy Awards<\/a> (with wins going to the first two released) and were commercially successful. Together with the theatrical anthology films<\/a> Rogue One: A Star Wars Story<\/a><\/i> (2016) and Solo: A Star Wars Story<\/a><\/i> (2018), the films combined box office revenue equates to over US$9 billion,[2]<\/a><\/sup> and is currently the second-highest-grossing film franchise<\/a>.[3]<\/a><\/sup>The film series expanded into other media, including television series, video games<\/a>, novels<\/a>, comic books<\/a>, theme park attractions<\/a> and themed areas<\/a>, resulting in an all encompassing fictional universe<\/a>. Star Wars<\/i> holds a Guinness World Records<\/a><\/i> title for the “Most successful film merchandising franchise”. In 2018, the total value of the Star Wars<\/i> franchise was estimated at US$65\u00a0<\/span>billion, and it is currently the fifth-highest-grossing media franchise<\/a> of all-time.<\/p>\n

<\/span>The Star Wars<\/i> franchise depicts the adventures of characters “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….<\/i>“[4]<\/a><\/sup> in which humans<\/a> and many species of aliens<\/a> (often humanoid<\/a>) co-exist with robots<\/a>, or “droids<\/a>“, who may assist them in their daily routines, and space travel<\/a> between planets is common due to hyperspace<\/a> technology.[5]<\/a><\/sup>[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup> The rises and falls of different governments are chronicled throughout the saga: the democratic Republic<\/a> is corrupted and overthrown<\/a> by Sheev Palpatine<\/a>, who establishes the Galactic Empire<\/a>.[8]<\/a><\/sup> The Empire is fought by the Rebel Alliance<\/a> in a Galactic Civil War<\/a> that spans several years. The surviving Rebellion gives rise to the New Republic<\/a>,[9]<\/a><\/sup> while the remnants of the Empire reform as the First Order<\/a> and threaten to destroy the Republic.[10]<\/a><\/sup> Heroes of the former rebellion lead the Resistance<\/a> against the oppressive dictatorship.A mystical power known as “the Force<\/a>” is described in the original film as “an energy field created by all living things … [that] binds the galaxy together.”[11]<\/a><\/sup> Through training and meditation, those whom “the Force is strong with” are able to perform various superpowers<\/a> (such as telekinesis<\/a>, precognition<\/a>, telepathy<\/a>, and manipulation of physical energy).[12]<\/a><\/sup> The Force is wielded by two major knighthood orders<\/a> at conflict with each other: the Jedi<\/a>, who act on the light side of the Force through non-attachment<\/a> and arbitration<\/a>, and the Sith<\/a>, who use the dark side by manipulating fear and aggression.
