The Matrix<\/b><\/i> is a science fiction<\/a> action<\/a> media franchise<\/a> created by The Wachowskis<\/a>, about a group of heroes who fight a desperate war against machine overlords that have enslaved humanity in an extremely sophisticated virtual reality<\/a> system. The series is most notable for its use of slow motion, which revolutionized action films to come. The series began with the feature film The Matrix<\/a><\/i> (1999), and continued with two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded<\/a><\/i> and The Matrix Revolutions<\/a><\/i> (both 2003), all written and directed by The Wachowskis and produced by Joel Silver<\/a>. The franchise is owned by Warner Bros.<\/a>, which distributed the films along with Village Roadshow Pictures<\/a>. The latter, along with Silver Pictures<\/a> are the two production companies that worked on all three films. The first film was an important critical and commercial success, winning four Academy Awards<\/a>, introducing popular culture<\/a> symbols such as the red pill and blue pill<\/a>, and influencing action filmmaking<\/a>.
