The fictional character Superman<\/a>, an American comic book<\/a> superhero in DC Comics<\/a> publications, has appeared in various films almost since his inception. He debuted in cinemas in a series of animated shorts<\/a> beginning in 1941, and then starred in two movie serials<\/a> in 1948 and 1950. An independent studio, Lippert Pictures<\/a>, released the first Superman feature film, Superman and the Mole Men<\/a><\/i>, starring George Reeves<\/a>, in 1951. Ilya<\/a> and Alexander Salkind<\/a> and Pierre Spengler<\/a> purchased the Superman<\/i> film rights<\/a> in 1974. After numerous scripts, Richard Donner<\/a> was hired to direct the film, filming Superman<\/a><\/i> (1978) and Superman II<\/a><\/i> (1980) simultaneously. Donner had already shot eighty percent of Superman II<\/i> with Christopher Reeve<\/a> before it was decided to finish shooting the first film. The Salkinds fired Donner after Superman<\/i>‘<\/span>s release and commissioned Richard Lester<\/a> as the director to finish Superman II<\/i>. Lester also returned for Superman III<\/a><\/i> (1983), and the Salkinds further produced the 1984 spin-off Supergirl<\/a><\/i> before selling the rights to Cannon Films<\/a>, resulting in the poorly reviewed Superman IV: The Quest for Peace<\/a><\/i> (1987). Ilya Salkind commissioned a fifth Superman<\/i> script before Warner Bros. acquired the rights entirely in 1993.<\/p>\n

Over the course of eleven years, Warner Bros. would develop and then cancel Tim Burton<\/a>‘s Superman Lives<\/i>, which would have starred Nicolas Cage<\/a>, Wolfgang Petersen<\/a>‘s Batman vs. Superman<\/i>, and the J. J. Abrams<\/a> scripted Superman: Flyby<\/i>, which went between directors Joseph “McG” Nichols<\/a> and Brett Ratner<\/a>. The studio hired Bryan Singer<\/a> to take over the films in 2004, releasing Superman Returns<\/a><\/i> in 2006, which starred newcomer Brandon Routh<\/a>. Donner’s director’s cut for Superman II<\/i><\/a> was also released that year. Despite positive reviews, Warner Bros. was disappointed with the financial performance of Superman Returns<\/i>, and canceled Singer’s proposed sequel. The studio nearly went into production of a Justice League<\/a> film with George Miller<\/a> directing and D. J. Cotrona<\/a> as Superman, but it was shelved in 2008 and the film series was rebooted<\/a> in 2013 with Man of Steel<\/a><\/i>, directed by Zack Snyder<\/a> with Henry Cavill<\/a> starring as Superman. Snyder and Cavill worked together again in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice<\/a><\/i> and Justice League<\/a><\/i>.<\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
