Star Trek Beyond<\/b><\/i> is a 2016 American science fiction<\/a> action film<\/a> directed by Justin Lin<\/a> from a screenplay by Simon Pegg<\/a> and Doug Jung, based on the series Star Trek<\/a><\/i>, created by Gene Roddenberry<\/a>. It is the thirteenth film in the Star Trek<\/i> film franchise<\/a> and the third installment in the reboot series<\/a>, following Star Trek<\/a><\/i> (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness<\/a><\/i> (2013). Chris Pine<\/a> and Zachary Quinto<\/a> reprise their roles as Captain James T. Kirk<\/a> and Commander Spock<\/a>, with Pegg, Karl Urban<\/a>, Zoe Saldana<\/a>, John Cho<\/a>, and Anton Yelchin<\/a> reprising their roles from the previous films. Idris Elba<\/a> and Sofia Boutella<\/a> also join the cast.<\/p>\n

Principal photography<\/a> began in Vancouver<\/a> on June 25, 2015. The film premiered in Sydney<\/a> on July 7, 2016 and was released in the United States on July 22, 2016. Beyond<\/i> marks one of the final film appearances of Yelchin, who died in a car accident a month before its scheduled release.\u00a0The film is dedicated to the memory of Yelchin as well as fellow Star Trek<\/i> actor Leonard Nimoy<\/a>, who died during pre-production. The film received positive reviews, with many critics praising the performances, action scenes, musical score, visual effects, and tributes to Yelchin and Nimoy, and has grossed over $160 million worldwide.<\/p>\n

A surprise attack in outer space forces the Enterprise to crash-land on a mysterious world. The assault came from Krall (Idris Elba), a lizard-like dictator who derives his energy by sucking the life out of his victims. Krall needs an ancient and valuable artifact that’s aboard the badly damaged starship. Left stranded in a rugged wilderness, Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the rest of the crew must now battle a deadly alien race while trying to find a way off their hostile planet.<\/div><\/div>\n
