Captain America: The First Avenger<\/b><\/i> is a 2011 American superhero film<\/a> based on the Marvel Comics<\/a> character Captain America<\/a>, produced by Marvel Studios<\/a> and distributed by Paramount Pictures<\/a>.[N 1]<\/a><\/sup> It is the fifth film<\/a> in the Marvel Cinematic Universe<\/a> (MCU). The film was directed by Joe Johnston<\/a>, written by the writing team of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely<\/a>, and stars Chris Evans<\/a> as Steve Rogers \/ Captain America, alongside Tommy Lee Jones<\/a>, Hugo Weaving<\/a>, Hayley Atwell<\/a>, Sebastian Stan<\/a>, Dominic Cooper<\/a>, Neal McDonough<\/a>, Derek Luke<\/a>, and Stanley Tucci<\/a>. Set predominantly during World War II<\/a>, the film tells the story of Steve Rogers, a sickly man from Brooklyn<\/a> who is transformed into the super-soldier Captain America and must stop the Red Skull<\/a>, who intends to use an artifact called the “Tesseract<\/a>” as an energy-source for world domination. The film began as a concept in 1997 and was scheduled for distribution by Artisan Entertainment<\/a>. However, a lawsuit not settled until September 2003 disrupted the project. In 2005, Marvel Studios received a loan from Merrill Lynch<\/a>, and planned to finance and release it through Paramount Pictures. Directors Jon Favreau<\/a> and Louis Leterrier<\/a> were interested in directing the project before Johnston was approached in 2008. The principal characters were cast between March and June 2010. Production began in June 2010, and filming took place in London<\/a>, Manchester<\/a>, Caerwent<\/a>, Liverpool<\/a>, and Los Angeles<\/a>.Captain America: The First Avenger<\/i> premiered at the El Capitan Theatre<\/a> on July 19, 2011, and was released in the United States on July 22, 2011. The film was commercially successful, grossing over $370 million worldwide. Critics particularly praised Evans’ performance, the film’s depiction of its 1940s time period, and Johnston’s direction. A sequel titled Captain America: The Winter Soldier<\/a><\/i> was released on April 4, 2014, and a third film titled Captain America: Civil War<\/a><\/i> was released on May 6, 2016.<\/p>\n

In March 1942, Nazi officer Johann Schmidt<\/a> and his men steal a mysterious relic called the Tesseract,[N 2]<\/a><\/sup> which possesses untold powers, from the town of T\u00f8nsberg<\/a> in German-occupied Norway<\/a>.In New York City<\/a>, Steve Rogers<\/a> is rejected for World War II<\/a> military recruitment because of various health and physical problems. While attending an exhibition of future technologies with his friend, Sgt. James “Bucky” Barnes<\/a>, Rogers again attempts to enlist. Overhearing Rogers’ conversation with Barnes about wanting to help in the war, Dr. Abraham Erskine<\/a> allows Rogers to enlist. He is recruited into the Strategic Scientific Reserve as part of a “super-soldier<\/a>” experiment under Erskine, Col. Chester Phillips<\/a>, and British agent Peggy Carter<\/a>. Phillips is unconvinced by Erskine’s claims that Rogers is the right person for the procedure but relents after seeing Rogers commit an act of self-sacrificing bravery<\/a>. The night before the treatment, Erskine reveals to Rogers that Schmidt underwent an imperfect version of the procedure and suffered permanent side-effects.<\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
