Pirates of the Caribbean<\/b><\/i> is a series of five fantasy<\/a> swashbuckler films<\/a> produced by Jerry Bruckheimer<\/a> and based on Walt Disney<\/a>‘s eponymous theme park ride<\/a>. Directors of the series include Gore Verbinski<\/a> (films 1\u20133), Rob Marshall<\/a>\u00a0(4) and Joachim R\u00f8nning<\/a> and Espen Sandberg<\/a> (5). The series is primarily written by Ted Elliott<\/a> and Terry Rossio<\/a> (1\u20134); other writers include Stuart Beattie<\/a> (1), Jay Wolpert<\/a> (1) and Jeff Nathanson<\/a> (5). The stories follow the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow<\/a> (Johnny Depp<\/a>), Will Turner<\/a> (Orlando Bloom<\/a>) and Elizabeth Swann<\/a> (Keira Knightley<\/a>). Characters such as Hector Barbossa<\/a> (Geoffrey Rush<\/a>) and Joshamee Gibbs<\/a> (Kevin McNally<\/a>) follow Jack, Will and Elizabeth in the course of the films. The fourth film features Blackbeard<\/a> (Ian McShane<\/a>) and Angelica<\/a> (Pen\u00e9lope Cruz<\/a>), while the fifth film features Armando Salazar<\/a> (Javier Bardem<\/a>), Henry Turner<\/a> (Brenton Thwaites<\/a>) and Carina Smyth<\/a> (Kaya Scodelario<\/a>). The films take place in a fictionalized historical setting; a world ruled by the British Empire<\/a>, the East India Trading Company (based on the real East India Company<\/a>) and the Spanish Empire<\/a>, with pirates representing freedom from the ruling powers.<\/p>\n

The franchise’s second film, subtitled Dead Man’s Chest<\/a><\/i>, was released three years later in 2006; the sequel proved successful, breaking financial records worldwide the day of its premiere. Dead Man’s Chest<\/i> ended up being the number one film of the year upon earning almost $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office. The third film in the series, subtitled At World’s End<\/a><\/i>, followed in 2007 earning $960 million, and Disney released a fourth film, subtitled On Stranger Tides<\/a><\/i>, in 2011 in conventional 2D, Digital 3-D<\/a> and IMAX 3D<\/a>. On Stranger Tides<\/i> succeeded in also grossing more than $1 billion,[1]<\/a><\/sup> becoming the second film in the franchise and only the eighth film in history to achieve this.The franchise has grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide;[1]<\/a><\/sup> it is the 14th-highest-grossing film series<\/a> of all time and it was the first franchise where more than one film grossed $1 billion worldwide.
