Olavi Virta<\/b> (originally to 1926 Oskari Olavi Ilm\u00e9n<\/b>) (27 February 1915 in Sysm\u00e4<\/a>, Grand Duchy of Finland<\/a> \u2013 14 July 1972 in Pispala<\/a>, Tampere<\/a>, Finland<\/a>) was a Finnish<\/a> singer, acclaimed during his time as the “King” of Finnish tango<\/a>.[1]<\/a><\/sup>[2]<\/a><\/sup>[3]<\/a><\/sup> Between 1939 and 1966 he recorded almost 600 songs, many of which are classics of Finnish popular music, and appeared in many films and theatrical productions.[4]<\/a><\/sup>[2]<\/a><\/sup> Of his most acclaimed tangos<\/a> are Punatukkaiselle tyt\u00f6lleni<\/i> (“For My Red Haired Girl”), Ennen kuolemaa<\/i> (“Before Death”; French<\/a>: Avant de Mourir<\/i>) and T\u00e4ysikuu<\/i> (“Full Moon”), while standouts from his other popular songs are Poika varjoisalta kujalta<\/i> (“Boy From a Shady Alley”; Italian<\/a>: Guaglione<\/i>), Hopeinen kuu<\/i> (“Silver Moon”; Italian: Guarda Che Luna<\/i>), Eva<\/i> and Kultainen nuoruus<\/i> (“The Golden Youth”).[5]<\/a><\/sup>[4]<\/a><\/sup>[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/i> He was also the second tenor of the quartet Kipparikvartetti<\/a> in the early 1950s.<\/p>\n

Virta was very much popular in the 1950s<\/a> in Finland, however, around 1959 is when his life began to go into a bit of a sour direction. His wife Irene, whom he had three children with, left him and moved to Sweden<\/a> in that year, he also began having health issues from an ever augmenting problem with Alcoholism<\/a>, Diabetes<\/a>, and a stroke<\/a>. His career was officially off the ropes when it was cut short one night in 1962 when he was scandalously arrested for drunken driving in Ilomantsi<\/a>, after which the press mockingly called him “The Singing Meatball.” Ten years later he succumbed to alcoholism, living his final years in poverty.<\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
