Downfall<\/b><\/i> (German<\/a>: Der Untergang<\/b><\/i>) is a 2004 historical<\/a> war<\/a> drama film<\/a> directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel<\/a> from a screenplay by producer Bernd Eichinger<\/a>. The film stars Bruno Ganz<\/a>, Alexandra Maria Lara<\/a>, Corinna Harfouch<\/a>, Ulrich Matthes<\/a>, Juliane K\u00f6hler<\/a>, Heino Ferch<\/a>, Christian Berkel<\/a>, Matthias Habich<\/a>, and Thomas Kretschmann<\/a>. It is set during the Battle of Berlin<\/a> in World War II<\/a>, when Germany<\/a> is on the verge of defeat, and depicts the final days of Adolf Hitler<\/a> (portrayed by Ganz). It is based on the books Inside Hitler’s Bunker<\/a><\/i> by historian Joachim Fest<\/a> and Until the Final Hour<\/a><\/i> by Hitler’s former private secretary Traudl Junge<\/a>, among other accounts of the period. Principal photography took place from September to November 2003, on location in Berlin<\/a>, Munich<\/a>, and in Saint Petersburg<\/a>, Russia<\/a>. As the film is set in and around the F\u00fchrerbunker<\/a><\/i>, Hirschbiegel used eyewitness accounts, survivors’ memoirs, and other historical sources during production to reconstruct the look and atmosphere of 1940s Berlin. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival<\/a> on 14 September 2004, but stirred controversy for portraying the human side of Hitler. It later received a wide theatrical release in Germany under its production company Constantin Film<\/a>. The film grossed over $92 million, received favourable reviews from critics, and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film<\/a> at the 77th Academy Awards<\/a>. Scenes from the film, such as the scene where Hitler displays rage after Felix Steiner<\/a> fails to obey his orders, spawned a series of Internet memes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 1942, young Traudl Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara) lands her dream job — secretary to Adolf Hitler (Bruno Ganz) at the peak of his power. Three years later, Hitler’s empire is now his underground bunker. The real-life Traudl narrates Hitler’s final days as he rages against imagined betrayers and barks orders to phantom armies, while his mistress, Eva Braun (Juliane K\u00f6hler), clucks over his emotional distance, and other infamous Nazis prepare for the end.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
