Metropolis<\/b><\/i> is a 1927 German expressionist<\/a> science-fiction<\/a> drama film<\/a> directed by Fritz Lang<\/a>. Written by Thea von Harbou<\/a> in collaboration with Lang,[5]<\/a><\/sup>[6]<\/a><\/sup> it stars Gustav Fr\u00f6hlich<\/a>, Alfred Abel<\/a>, Rudolf Klein-Rogge<\/a> and Brigitte Helm<\/a>. Erich Pommer<\/a> produced it in the Babelsberg Studios<\/a> for Universum Film A.G.<\/a> (UFA). The silent film<\/a> is regarded as a pioneering science-fiction<\/a> movie, being among the first feature-length<\/a> movies of that genre.[7]<\/a><\/sup> Filming took place over 17 months in 1925\u201326 at a cost of more than five million Reichsmarks<\/a>.[8]\u00a0<\/a><\/sup>Made in Germany during the Weimar Period<\/a>, Metropolis<\/i> is set in a futuristic urban dystopia<\/a> and follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city master, and Maria, a saintly figure to the workers, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes in their city and bring the workers together with Joh Fredersen, the city master. The film’s message is encompassed in the final inter-title<\/a>: “The Mediator Between the Head and the Hands Must Be the Heart”.<\/p>\n

This influential German science-fiction film presents a highly stylized futuristic city where a beautiful and cultured utopia exists above a bleak underworld populated by mistreated workers. When the privileged youth Freder (Gustav Fr\u00f6hlich) discovers the grim scene under the city, he becomes intent on helping the workers. He befriends the rebellious teacher Maria (Brigitte Helm), but this puts him at odds with his authoritative father, leading to greater conflict.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
