The screenplay by Horton Foote<\/a> is based on Harper Lee<\/a>‘s 1960<\/a> Pulitzer Prize<\/a>-winning novel of the same name<\/a>. It stars Gregory Peck<\/a> as Atticus Finch<\/a> and Mary Badham<\/a> as Scout. To Kill a Mockingbird<\/i> marked the film debuts of Robert Duvall<\/a>, William Windom<\/a>, and Alice Ghostley<\/a>. The film received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and was a box-office success, earning more than six times its budget. The film won three Academy Awards<\/a>, including Best Actor<\/a> for Peck, and was nominated for eight, including Best Picture<\/a>. In 1995, the film was listed in the National Film Registry<\/a>. In 2003, the American Film Institute<\/a> named Atticus Finch the greatest movie hero of the 20th century. In 2007, the film ranked twenty-fifth on the AFI’s 10th anniversary<\/a> list of the greatest American movies of all time. In 2005, the British Film Institute included it in their list of the 50 films you should see by the age of 14. Scout Finch (Mary Badham), 6,and her older brother, Jem (Phillip Alford), live in sleepy Maycomb, Ala., spending much of their time with their friend Dill (John Megna) and spying on their reclusive and mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley (Robert Duvall). When Atticus (Gregory Peck), their widowed father and a respected lawyer, defends a black man named Tom Robinson (Brock Peters) against fabricated rape charges, the trial and tangent events expose the children to evils of racism and stereotyping.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
