Taxi Driver<\/b><\/i> is a 1976 American neo-noir<\/a>[4]<\/a><\/sup> psychological thriller<\/a> film[5]<\/a><\/sup> directed by Martin Scorsese<\/a>, written by Paul Schrader<\/a>, and starring Robert De Niro<\/a>, Jodie Foster<\/a>, Cybill Shepherd<\/a>, Harvey Keitel<\/a>, Peter Boyle<\/a>, Albert Brooks<\/a> and Leonard Harris<\/a>. Set in a decaying New York City<\/a> following the Vietnam War<\/a>, the film tells the story of a lonely veteran (De Niro) working as a taxi<\/a> driver, who descends into insanity as he plots to assassinate both the presidential candidate (Harris) for whom the woman he is infatuated with (Shepherd) works, and the pimp (Keitel) of an underage prostitute<\/a> (Foster) he befriends. A critical and commercial success upon release and nominated for four Academy Awards<\/a>, including for Best Picture<\/a>, Best Actor<\/a> (for De Niro) and Best Supporting Actress<\/a> (for Foster), Taxi Driver<\/i> won the Palme d’Or<\/a> at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival<\/a>. The film generated controversy upon release mostly because of its depiction of violence and casting of a 12-year old Foster as the child prostitute. It is regularly cited by critics, film directors, and audiences alike as one of the greatest films of all time<\/a>. Suffering from insomnia, disturbed loner Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) takes a job as a New York City cabbie, haunting the streets nightly, growing increasingly detached from reality as he dreams of cleaning up the filthy city.
