Vertigo<\/b><\/i> is a 1958 American film noir<\/a> psychological thriller film<\/a> directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock<\/a>. The story was based on the 1954 novel D’entre les morts<\/a><\/i> (From Among the Dead<\/i>) by Boileau-Narcejac<\/a>. The screenplay was written by Alec Coppel<\/a> and Samuel A. Taylor<\/a>. The film stars James Stewart<\/a> as former police detective<\/a> John “Scottie” Ferguson. Scottie is forced into early retirement because an incident in the line of duty has caused him to develop acrophobia<\/a> (an extreme fear of heights) and vertigo<\/a> (a false sense of rotational movement). Scottie is hired by an acquaintance, Gavin Elster, as a private investigator<\/a> to follow Gavin’s wife Madeleine (Kim Novak<\/a>), who is behaving strangely.<\/p>\n

An ex-police officer who suffers from an intense fear of heights is hired to prevent an old friend’s wife from committing suicide, but all is not as it seems. Hitchcock’s haunting, compelling masterpiece is uniquely revelatory about the director’s own predilections and hang-ups and is widely considered to be one of his masterworks.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
