Das Boot<\/b><\/i> (German pronunciation: <\/small>[das \u02c8bo\u02d0t]<\/a><\/span>, German: “The Boat”) is a 1981 German submarine film<\/a> written and directed by Wolfgang Petersen<\/a>, produced by G\u00fcnter Rohrbach, and starring J\u00fcrgen Prochnow<\/a>, Herbert Gr\u00f6nemeyer<\/a>, and Klaus Wennemann<\/a>. It has been exhibited both as a theatrical release<\/a> and as a TV miniseries<\/a> (1985), in several different home video<\/a> versions of various running times, and in a director’s cut<\/a> version supervised by Petersen in 1997. An adaptation<\/a> of Lothar-G\u00fcnther Buchheim<\/a>‘s 1973 German novel of the same name, the film is set during World War II<\/a> and follows German U-boat<\/a> U-96<\/a> and its crew, as they set out on a hazardous patrol in the Battle of the Atlantic<\/a>. It depicts both the excitement of battle and the tedium of the fruitless hunt, and shows the men serving aboard U-boats<\/a> as ordinary individuals with a desire to do their best for their comrades and their country.<\/p>\n

A German submarine patrols the Atlantic Ocean during World War II, manned by a crew that must contend with tense conflicts and long stretches of confined boredom.
