ndependence Day: Resurgence<\/b><\/i> is a 2016 American science fiction<\/a> film directed by Roland Emmerich<\/a> and written by Emmerich, Dean Devlin, Nicolas Wright, James A. Woods and James Vanderbilt<\/a>. It is the sequel to the 1996 film Independence Day<\/a><\/i> and stars an ensemble cast<\/a> featuring Liam Hemsworth<\/a>, Jeff Goldblum<\/a>, Bill Pullman<\/a>, Jessie Usher<\/a>, Maika Monroe<\/a>, Sela Ward<\/a>, Judd Hirsch<\/a>, Brent Spiner<\/a>, and William Fichtner<\/a>. Although some of the original cast members reprise their roles from the first film, Will Smith<\/a>, Margaret Colin<\/a>, James Rebhorn<\/a> (who died in 2014), and Adam Baldwin<\/a> did not return; and Monroe and Usher take over Mae Whitman<\/a> and Ross Bagley<\/a>‘s roles, respectively.<\/p>\n

The film focuses on the battle between ESD (Earth Space Defense), an international military defense and research organization, and the returning alien invaders during the twentieth anniversary of humanity\u2019s first victory against the latter on July 4 \u2013 the same date as the Independence Day<\/a> in the United States.<\/p>\n

It was released by 20th Century Fox<\/a> in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D in the United States on June 24, 2016. The film received generally negative reviews from critics, who found the plot and action sequences to be overblown and convoluted, though some praised its overall humor and playful delivery.\u00a0It has grossed over $168 million worldwide.<\/p>\n

As the Fourth of July nears, satellite engineer David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) investigates a 3,000-mile-wide mother ship that’s approaching Earth.
