Life Is Beautiful<\/b><\/i> (Italian<\/a>: La vita \u00e8 bella<\/i> Italian pronunciation:\u00a0<\/small>[la \u02c8vi\u02d0ta \u02cc\u025b b\u02c8b\u025blla]<\/a><\/span>) is a 1997 Italian comedy-drama<\/a> film directed by and starring Roberto Benigni<\/a>, who co-wrote the film with Vincenzo Cerami<\/a>. Benigni plays Guido Orefice, a Jewish Italian<\/a> bookshop owner, who employs his fertile imagination to shield his son from the horrors of internment in a Nazi concentration camp<\/a>. The film was partially inspired by the book In the End, I Beat Hitler<\/i> by Rubino Romeo Salmon\u00ec<\/a> and by Benigni’s father, who spent two years in a German labour camp during World War II<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A gentle Jewish-Italian waiter, Guido Orefice (Roberto Benigni), meets Dora (Nicoletta Braschi), a pretty schoolteacher, and wins her over with his charm and humor. Eventually they marry and have a son, Giosue (Giorgio Cantarini). Their happiness is abruptly halted, however, when Guido and Giosue are separated from Dora and taken to a concentration camp. Determined to shelter his son from the horrors of his surroundings, Guido convinces Giosue that their time in the camp is merely a game.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
